Who or what is Holt-Howard? Though this name may not be familiar to you; it is difficult to imagine, you haven’t seen their amazing work. If you enjoy vintage Christmas items, there is a 99.9% chance, you have come across, some of their whimsical treasures.
Holt-Howard was an importer that started working in New York City in 1949 and moved to Stamford, Connecticut, in 1955. John and Robert Howard and Grant Holt started Holt-Howard, whose first products were Christmas items made and sold in the United States. Holt-Howard made beautiful decorative mid-century ceramics, but also went on to design extraordinary pieces into
usable art, as well. Functional beauty!
Holt-Howard’s designs were unmistakably unique to anything on the market at the time of their inception. Bright colors embrace happy, smiling faces on many of his figurines. You can find festive punch bowls with companion ladles and cups, pitchers with matching mugs, various styles of candle holders, serving dishes and other useful table accessories, all in multiple shapes and sizes and colors. The list of these delicious pieces is nearly endless.
Consider yourself forewarned! If you choose to venture into this exciting, mid-century wonderland, don’t be surprised! These pieces are often winking mischievously, or staring at you, with impish grins, that beg the question “What ever could they be up too?”
The Holt-Howard Company was purchased in 1969, by the General Housewares Corporation. The well-known, HH mark, was used until 1974. These items are highly sought after by collectors. Production of the Holt-Howard line came to an end in 1990.
Once you experience this wondrous fantasy world, your inner child will always yearn, for the sweet-tasting nostalgia, of Christmases past, and the undeniable desire to share it with everyone you love.
